A Local's Guide to Dining in Whitewater
Whitewater may be a small town but it is filled with countless delicious and unique dining options that locals love. In recent years, a new crop of pioneering chefs have arrived and joined long standing local favorites to truly spice up the town’s restaurant scene. We’ve lived here a long time and we promise we are still not bored with all the delicious places to eat. Whether you are in the mood for sloppy BBQ or authentic Italian cuisine, Whitewater has more than enough dining options to keep you satisfied during your stay. And they’re all within walking distance from Hamilton House Bed & Breakfast!
Fanatico is the best Italian restaurant in town, hands down. Their menu is filled with classic home cooked Italian dishes like chicken piccata, eggplant parmesan, and spaghetti pomodoro. With its warm ambiance, friendly staff, and affordable prices, Fanatico is a must for any visitor to Whitewater. Go and you will likely see a few college students who convinced their parents to take them here while they were visiting.
Founded by a former UW-Whitewater student who found himself dismayed by the town’s dull (and often unhealthy) dining options, Black Sheep is a fresh and inventive addition to Whitewater’s restaurant scene. It is called Black Sheep because it considers itself different from other restaurants in town. Black Sheep sources its ingredients from local farmers and designs its menu based on seasonality. The wines, cheeses, meats, and produce you eat at Black Sheep very likely come from a local farmer. The owners even visit the farms to ensure the animals are treated humanely. Their meals are unique, sustainable, and of course, delicious. It might not be a “black sheep” in Whitewater, but this restaurant definitely stands out.
The Sweetspot Bakehouse and Cafe
The Sweetspot is a popular bakery and lunch spot in Whitewater. There are actually two locations: the bakehouse and the cafe, and you can't go wrong with either. Go to the bakery for an amazing afternoon treat of baked goods and hand crafted coffee drinks. We especially like their cupcakes. Their cafe is a great place to grab a lunch or coffee with a friend. They serve healthy soups, salads, and sandwiches along with selected baked goods.
For world class BBQ in a fun, unpretentious setting, head to Casual Joe’s. They serve up mouthwatering meat platters, sandwiches, nachos, and classic BBQ sides like baked beans, mac ‘n cheese, and coleslaw. Many locals love their Smash Bowls, which each have their own base of either Wisconsin cheese, tater tots, or corn. And if you are vegetarian, have no fear! Casual Joe’s offers vegetarian options, such as creative mac and cheese, as well as salads and veggie-centric dishes.
Taco Fresco takes tacos to the next level. Think of what you might find offered at a taco truck in California. They serve up all the Mexican classics along with original creations like fried avocado tacos, Asian steak tacos, and Moroccan chicken tacos. Even if you stick with something a little more traditional, you can't go wrong. Their tacos, burritos, and sides are absolutely delicious. This hip taco joint is a great place to mingle with college students and the local scenesters while enjoying good music and a mouthwatering meal.
Second Salem Brewery
Second Salem Brewery is one of Whitewater’s very own craft breweries. The guys at Second Salem brew a tasty and diverse range of craft beers on-site using the unique one-barrel “nanobrewing” technique. Many of their beers are inspired by local legends that Whitewater was once a haven for witches and werewolves. They also offer a great food menu in their tap room that goes beyond typical pub fare to serve pesto salmon BLTs, veggie-packed Mediterranean salads, sweet potato fries, and sirloin steak.
