People don't typically associate “Wisconsin” with fine wines. We are a beer state, loud and proud, and our long and notoriously frigid winters are a far cry from the sun-dappled wine regions of Sonoma or Tuscany. However, Wisconsin is quickly gaining notoriety for its unique variety of cold-weather grapes that thrive in the harsh conditions and rugged landscapes of the upper Midwest. If you are a curious oenophile looking for a unique wine tasting experience, you will find much to love about the Whitewater area.
The Staller Estate Winery a short 10-minute drive from the inn, serves delicious wines in a tranquil, rustic setting. All wines are made on-site using cold, hardy Wisconsin grapes. Staller produces a variety of wines, from oak aged reds to tangy whites. Your visit to the winery comes with a complimentary tasting, but you can also choose from several premium wine flights in their tasting room. They also serve excellent Wisconsin cheese, sausage, and chocolate platters. Check out their calendar to view a full schedule of winery and vineyard tours. The friendly staff and vintners are happy to chat with you and share their wine knowledge, enhancing your Wisconsin wine experience.
Apple Barn Orchard and Winery is another great local winery specializing in fruit wines, or wines made from non-grape fruits like peach, berries, and rhubarb. Located in Elkhorn, Apple Barn is nestled in a stunning landscape surrounded by apple trees and rolling hills. The Apple Barn doubles as a pick-your-own apple orchard and a charming country store, where you can purchase fruit, cider, doughnuts, jam, jelly, cookies, pie, honey, cheese, and of course, wine.
If you prefer to sip your wine at a restaurant or on your couch, there are several great options in Whitewater. We like Black Sheep, a wonderful local restaurant that serves delicious and locally sourced food from a seasonally-changing menu. Their menu will satisfy carnivores and vegetarians alike, but it will also be a special treat for wine lovers. Black Sheep boasts the most extensive wine list in all of Whitewater, along with great cocktails and craft beer. They also host a variety of wine-related events throughout the year. If you're still thirsty for some vino, Acorn Beverage is the best wine shop in town, selling over 500 domestic and imported wines as well as craft beer, cider, and snacks.
The Hamilton House Bed & Breakfast offers our guests wine glasses, openers, and stoppers, making it the perfect place to enjoy a delicious bottle of Wisconsin wine on our Gazebo porch or in the shade of our back garden.
